As the international date line swung around to the States and rain finally stopped in NY, a few hundred people lined up outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store today for Apple’s new iPhone, with the those The iLife guys up front descending into the store at 7AM to the sound of applause from the cheery horde of Apple Store employees. It was a far sight from the mayhem of previous launches — the whole line was able to be contained in the elevated portion to the right of the store, no sidewalk necessary — but it was still a fairly impressive turnout for a spec-bumped phone and a rainy night. Stand by for video from the launch, and be sure to send in your own launch impressions.

Update: Video is after the break!

That $599 non-subsidized price still sounds silly — and $299 with a 2-year $60 monthly contract seems almost more extreme — but there’s no denying that the Booklet 3G is a truly premium netbook. It’s light, strong and very elegant, with an aluminum chassis, wonderful keyboard and spacious two-finger-scroll touchpad. Unfortunately, those netbook innards deliver about what you’d expect in the performance arena (almost too slow for web browsing), and NY’s AT&T <strike>3G</strike> coverage certainly doesn’t serve the laptop well (as demonstrated on video after the break). There’s also the small matter of the screen: it has a pretty weak viewing angle, particularly from above, and overall just seems a little dim. Nokia’s software approach isn’t too revolutionary, since the Social Hub — which offers threaded text messaging over 3G — is the only exclusive app on the computer, and the Ovi Maps-branded GPS software is still in the works. Overall, the appeal is probably going to be strongest with dyed-in-the-wool Nokia fans and people with a bit of extra cash to burn, but this is an obviously elegant product that doesn’t do any sort of disservice to its phone heritage.

Update: Nokia just clarified to us that the demo units at this event were actually from the UK, and therefore don’t have US 3G — which would certainly explain some of the speed issues.

The machine is set to hit retail sometime in the months contained within the year 2010 at a price of roughly $1,000, which seems like a good enough deal to us, but you may think differently after watching the smudge-riddled video after the break.

This sort of aggressive roadmap meshes with earlier rumors of a Tegra platform powering the next generation of Nintendo’s DS, and promises an equally tantalizing upgrade to the Zune HD specs. Keep in mind that the info comes from those highly anonymous and entirely unaccountable “industry sources,” but given the time that will pass between the availability of the first Tegra chipset and the suggested 2010 release of Tegra 2, it makes sense to believe that the engineers have had sufficient opportunity to optimize and energize their platform. It’s not like NVIDIA has been wasting its time setting up anti-Intel websites and putting together snarky cartoons about its competition, right?

Well, Intel hasn’t exactly been making many secrets about its latest cadre of processors, and at least a few of them already seem to be shipping in some parts of the world, but it now looks like things could soon be about to get a whole lot more official. According to DigiTimes, Intel is set to announce its new Core i5-750, Core i7-860 and Core i7-870 CPUs (and the P55 chipset to go along with ‘em) on September 8th, which is almost right in line with some of the earliest rumors on the matter. Details are otherwise a bit light, although DigiTimes‘ “sources” estimate that P55-based motherboards could account for as much as 20% of total motherboard shipments by the end of 2009.

History, happenstance, and the realities of electromagnetics have left you with an oddball 3G frequency that literally no other carrier in the world uses (at least, not for HSPA). Larger competitors don’t take you as seriously as you’d like, and you don’t have smaller ones — they’re all regionals who don’t play in the same space you do. So what’s your next move?

Playing video on most netbooks is risky business; any file with a moderately high resolution and/or bitrate quickly devolves into a 1fps headache. The solution, as HP has already figured out, is a mini PCI-e Broadcom HD video accelerator, exactly what the folks at Terracode managed to wedge into an Acer Aspire One. That enabled the system to handle 1080p content without a hitch — through an external monitor, of course, since watching 1920 x 1080 content on a 1024 x 600 screen is like making a VHS copy of the Watchmen Director’s Cut Blu-ray. And, since the tiny portable didn’t have enough storage for more than a few minutes worth of content at such a mighty resolution, a 64GB Kingston ssdNow V was added too. The result? See for yourself in the before and after videos that are just a short click away. Spoiler alert: no more slideshow puppy dogs.

The kids at Liliputing got their hands on the Asus Eee Top ET2002 all-in-one recently and were cool enough to both put it through its paces and clue us in on their findings. According to the reviewer the device, which sports a 1.6GHz Dual Core Atom 330 processor, a 20-inch / 1600 x 900 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive, was “impressive… in many ways.” It easily handles 1080p playback and video games that would cause “most Intel-Atom based PCs to choke.” Aside from the ION graphics, unfortunately, this guy comports itself like a “typical” Atom netbook: unzipping large files takes forever, boot times are slow, and the system sometimes felt overtasked when browsing the web. Then again, when you’re spending less than $600 on a machine (Amazon’s currently selling ‘em for $581) you’re going to have to make some compromises. Hit the read link to see for yourself.

In the video posted just after the break, the company’s own Steve Sperle sat down to talk about a new Pegatron netbook (which handles 720p video playback with ease) as well as an Inventec “smartbook” which is just marginally larger than your average smartphone. In fact, we’re rather impressed with the layout: a larger-than-average 4-inch display, a slideout QWERTY keyboard and Google’s Android OS. Unfortunately, Mr. Sperle would only stick close to the “later this year” launch time frame that we’d already heard about, but so long as these smartbooks end up looking like overpowered smartphones, you can certainly consider our interest piqued.
